Place your thumb and forefinger about six to eight inches from your ear and rub them together.
Do you hear any friction noise? If not you may ask yourself:
- Do I turn up the television or radio to the point where others complain?
- Do I strain to hear conversation, misunderstand words or often ask people to repeat
themselves?
- Do I watch the speaker’s face intently when they talk?
- Am I tired or frustrated at the end of the day from the strain of trying to hear?
- Do I feel handicapped by my hearing?
- Do I accuse others of mumbling or not speaking up?
- Do I hear okay one on one but have trouble when another speaker or competing noise is introduced?
- Does my hearing cause family arguments?
- Do I avoid social situations because of my hearing?
- Has my family or friends suggested I have my hearing tested?

If you find yourself answering positively to two or more of these questions, a hearing evaluation is in order. You may have waited because you can still “hear but just can’t make out all the words.” Most hearing losses are greatest in the higher frequencies which are the most important for understanding speech. When these consonant sounds are not heard, words seem to “run together,” which is a common phrase we hear in our office. When competing noise is introduced such as a television or another speaker, the problem is intensified.
Don’t Miss Out On The Good Times
Haven’t you wasted enough time missing out on the good times with family and friends, avoiding church services and social activities? Hearing loss is progressive, so why wait? Improve the quality of your life through good hearing. “As a hearing aid wearer, myself, I understand the frustrations of hearing loss and know how the quality of my everyday living has improved with my hearing aids,” says Luke Fortner, owner of Arnold Hearing Aid. “We will offer you a thorough hearing evaluation in a no-pressure environment and show you how your hearing can be improved with today’s digital technology. There is no charge for this testing.”
